Chapter Thirteen: It’s A Numbers Game

WINSTON DROVE HOME from work and circled through a drive-thru line for dinner. He disliked getting into the fast food habit, but some nights it was the most logical answer. Like tonight, for example. He’d stayed late at work by thirty minutes, stuck on a phone call with a vendor. When he arrived home, he’d have to hustle through Rebel’s walk, eat, and get on a phone call with LeiaPower before the evening’s games started. Hamburger and fries beside him on the seat, he headed home.

Pushing through Rebel’s overly enthusiastic greeting, he maneuvered her into her harness and out the door. Back inside after two miles, she plopped on the couch and rested her head on her paws, long tongue panting. Within five minutes, his phone rang. The name LeiaPower was emblazoned across his screen. His pulse increased as he answered, “Hi, Leia.”

“Hi, Winston.” Her sultry voice caused a shudder in his breath. “How are things going for you tonight?”

“Great. How about you?”

A giggle tinkled over the line. “Better now that I get to speak to you.”

He shook his head, his brain whirring in confusion. He should be thrilled that she was so complimentary of him. Her praise was an ego rush, no doubt. But it made him uncomfortable, unleashing in him an impulse to fight it. Was it because of his budding relationship with Tina? Or was it because her adoration of him was wrong in God's eyes?

All he knew was, he was totally out of his league and had no idea how to handle it.

He cleared his throat. “So, you wanted to share with me your plans for the workshop proposal?”

“That’s right. I thought I’d start with a bang and share all your impressive credentials. Really knock ‘em dead and let them know who they’re dealing with here. You know, top Star Battler champion four years running. Highest scoring fighter pilot, most clean kills career-level, winningest team captain two years in a row.”

She rattled off his accomplishments in the gaming world and he soon found it hard to listen. A buzzing in his ears made him feel detached. He forced himself to focus on what she was telling him. Yes, some could say he was a leader in the Star Battler online game. But this was not an achievement that caused him a great deal of pride. There was nothing wrong with it particularly, but it definitely wasn’t something he openly talked about with his friends, with his parents, with anyone.

When you broke it down, what did all those accomplishments mean? It meant he’d spent an inordinate number of hours every night, sitting here alone on his couch, playing a game. He had an aptitude for it, and he’d gotten good at it.

So what?

What could he have done with all those hundreds, no, thousands of hours? What would God have had him do with all those hours instead of playing games, if only he’d been tuned into God’s will?

For that matter, how long
